Braces, Splint, Prosthodontics or Surgery: Which is the Best Treatment for TMJ?

If you’re suffering from temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ), chances are you’d want to know what your choices are when it comes to correcting and managing your condition. Dr. Edward Beduya, a TMJ specialist, says there are four known ways TMJ can be addressed.

“There are four ways to correct and manage TMJ—orthodontics, the use of splint, prosthodontics, which is the addition of dentures, and surgery. For those who do not know, TMJ is a disorder wherein one or both of the temporomandibular joints, the joints connecting the jawbone to the skull, malfunctions due to a variety of reasons. In order to correct this and properly maintain the function and aesthetic of these areas, they need to be put back to their proper position,” shares Dr. Beduya.

Citing that the course of treatment that is most suitable per patient varies from one person to the next, Dr. Beduya says that most cases are caused by misalignment of the jaw, which can be best treated with the installment of splint first and then orthodontics. or a combination of both and physical therapy. It is also very rare that a dentist will recommend surgery and is oftentimes the last result when all else fails.

“We’re talking about a major surgery here. One that will cost tens of thousands of pesos, if not hundreds of thousands. A surgical approach to treating TMJ is only applicable if the patient continues to suffer chronic pain and disabling dysfunctions after a proper course of treatment is administered, that is to say, physical therapy, the use of splint and orthodontics. This usually results from severe structural problems in the temporomandibular joints. Simply put, surgery is reserved for the worst-case scenarios,” Dr. Beduya explains.

“There are some doctors—those who’ve had significant experience in managing TMJ—who are able to further quicken the restitution of the temporomandibular joints using a combination of splint and orthodontics. This means, installing both a splint and braces at the same time and quickening the recovery process and lessening the pain felt by the client by means of physical therapy. Although a bit costly, this course of treatment is very effective and renders faster results. However, not all dentists are qualified to perform this. You really need to find the right doctor who can provide this service as one wrong move can worsen your condition,” he adds.
